The instructor reads a factoring problem aloud and the students work together to solve the problem at the board. There is something missing in this “formula.” What is missing are the human and the “theory into practice” components. Sometimes, I'm in the big theater with 140 students and manage to pull it off in there too (just not as much group work.) I estimate that I've done my Survivor Algebra gig with a few thousand students, so far.

The mental model starts with a correspondence between a number and a set of objects (e.g., 5 corresponds to five apples). This methodology was created by a Singaporean teacher called Hector Chee.
